PROMOTE YOUR FREELANCE WRITER USP FOR MORE WRITING GIGS
To make money as a freelance writer, you need to have a unique selling proposition, or USP. In other words, you need to give your customers a reason to work with you rather than your competitors. In this post, I’m going to discuss some of the reasons this is so important.
The reality is, you’re competing with people around the world when you are working on the internet. Many marketers are used to paying pennies for their content, outsourcing it to countries like the Philippines and India where the cost of living – and therefore the working wage – is far lower.
If you’re charging your clients $20 per article and there are other writers charging $2, you need to give your clients a good reason to pay that extra money.
This is why your USP is so necessary. If you have a good reason for charging what you do, and it’s strong enough to convince clients to pay you what you’re worth, you’ll be able to land as many writing jobs as you have time for.
TYPES OF USPs FOR FREELANCE WRITERS
- Expertise in a particular market
- Fast turnaround
- High quality content that is thoroughly researched
My favorite type of USP is specialization. If you know a lot about a market then you can charge more because you’re providing expert content.
eg. If you’re an expert in the weight loss market you would have a huge target market. The market is very competitive, but a lot of the content out there is just not very good.
If you specialized in that market, it would be a matter of finding a few of the more successful marketers and offering your services to them. You could even write some content for them to use absolutely free to get started.
This would not only let them see the quality of your work, it could also help get your “foot in the door” for further work.
Whatever freelance writer USP you settle on, make sure you make it front-and-center in any marketing you do. Put it on your website, in your ads, on your business card and anywhere else that potential customers might see it.
If at all possible, you want your customers to know how good you are before they ever see your prices, because then your prices will become secondary.
